Is this a scam? Protecting Yourself from Phishing Scams on Facebook
Phishing Alert:
We have seen an increase in phishing attempts coming through Meta/Facebook. Many of these attempts are impersonating Meta.
Do not click on links if you don’t recognize the sender.
Understanding Phishing:
Definition: Phishing is an attempt to steal personal information (e.g., passwords, credit card numbers) via deceptive messages or links.
Common Tactics: Scammers send links that lead to fake websites to steal your information.
Tips to Avoid Phishing:
Don’t Click Unknown Links: Avoid links and attachments from unknown sources, even if they appear from Facebook.
Look for Red Flags: Misspellings, bad grammar, urgent demands, or requests for personal information are suspicious.
Verify Senders: Check if messages are from legitimate sources:
Official email domains: fb.com, facebook.com, facebookmail.com, instagram.com, meta.com, metamail.com, support.facebook.com
Limit Phishing Messages by Adjusting Privacy Settings:
You can reduce the number of phishing messages by changing your privacy settings to only allow US residents to view your content/page. To do this:
Go to your Facebook page.
Navigate to Settings.
Go to Followers and Public Content.
Under Country Restrictions, click Edit.
Type in United States and select Show only to certain countries.
Click Save.
This will reduce, but not eliminate, phishing attempts.
